Why Learn Baby Signlanguage?

All babies instinctively use their body to send us signals that they are trying to communicate to us by using facial expressions, crying, noises, and gestures.  Teaching a baby sign language helps the baby to learn how to communicate with their parents.

For example, all babies are trying to get our attention by making noises, crying, tightening/tensing their body,  raising arms to be picked up, smaking lips when hungry, or spitting out foods when he or she had enough or not liking the food.  Or pointing out to an object that he/she wants and the baby would arch his/her back, crying, grunting, or clentching fist to demonstrate anger as the baby tries to communicate he/she does not want.

By expanding your baby communication with you will help your baby to tell you exactly what he/she wants with one boby language and sign language.   This would eliminate a huge stress of frustrations between the parents, caregivers, teachers and others.

What signs do we use?

The signlanguage that we use are similar to signs that are used in the deaf communities.  All young babies have limited coordinations and dexterity, we have subsituted some of the difficault signs to an easy symbol hand signs.  Thiese signs would not be a n second language however, it is to aid in early communication.  It does not matter what hand you or the baby uses the signs with left or right hand, your baby will naturally use their favorite hand to sign.

When using baby signs (BSL) it is  important to voice out the words when you use BSL to your baby, this would help to make it easier for your baby to understand what you are talking about by saying one word in each sentence with a simple baby language and by repetitions.  The signs we use will relate to feelings, objects, and other things.  Keep focusing on what your baby want to talk to you about.
